The weather leading up to the nest box cleaning was cold and windy. So cold and windy that the morning of the event it was cancelled. We were also supposed to get snow the day before but we only got flurries. The event was supposed to go at 10:00 am. Instead three of us went ahead that afternoon. It was cold and windy up on the dike but not bad down below where most of the nest boxes are located.
Box usage was way down but there were some interesting finds. In one box that we found some mice in a state of torpor. In one Wood duck box we found that the tray was cemented in place by a fibrous mass produced by an insect.
